Student Action Committee (SAC)

The PPA Student Group is open to all student members of the PPA. The Student Action Committee (SAC) is responsible for managing the Student Group and organizing the annual student meeting-networking-reception. Please read on for more information on how to become an active member and stay current with Student Group activities.

PPA Student Group on Facebook.com
Student members of the PPA can stay up-to-date with the Student Group happenings by joining us on Facebook.com (FB). We currently have over 100 members from all over the world! This site is only open to student members of the PPA. Here, student members can discuss common interests in paleopathology, share ideas, network, and post information on skeletal collections and other resources.

To join the PPA Student Group on Facebook (FB):
1. Go to www.facebook.com and search for our group under: Paleopathology Association Student Group.
2. You will need to join FB before you can request to join the Student Group page.
3. Once you make a request to join the Student Group, FB will notify us and we will confirm your PPA membership. For new PPA members, please be patient while we confirm your PPA membership.

2012 MEETING: PORTLAND, OR

We are seeking members who would participate in a job talk panel. These volunteers would talk about the hiring process for academic jobs. Specifically, we are interested in hearing stories about the interviewing, job talk, and campus visit parts of the academic hiring process. What is a job talk? How long are campus visits? What is the best way to present her or him to future employers? Ideally, we would like participants who have recently hired someone at their institution or have recently been hired. We would like to invite panelists from Europe and the States. If you have interest in participating in this panel, please e-mail our new co-chair, Mary Beth Timm at mbtimm@gmail.com.

Please join us for a Happy Hour Social that will again take place after the meeting. We will hand each student who attends the meeting two drink tickets for the cash bar (either soda or beer). One ticket will be for the student and the other to share with a professional. We hope that this will help students and professionals mingle.

Elections will be held at the 2012 meeting. We will be voting for Co-Chair, Secretary, and Fundraising Officer. It is preferable that you have already served as a Student Group officer. So, if you are really interested in running for Co-Chair now or in the future, please run for another office now! If existing officers do not wish to run for Co-Chair, then the election will be open to anyone who is interested. Please check back HERE and on FB for a more detailed election announcement, including a description of officer duties.

STUDENT FUNDRAISING

We would like to try a new fundraiser this year as a calendar featuring Paleopathologists and their Pets. The calendar would have pictures submitted by senior members with their favorite furry (and not so furry) friends. The calendar will have deadlines for abstract submissions and projected conference dates for the PPA, AAPA, AAA, SAA, etc. These calendars will be sold at our upcoming meeting. In order to make this a successful project, we will need photo submissions from you. Please send photos of you and your pets to mbtimm@gmail.com.

As always, we are seeking donations for our Silent Auction. Please e-mail us if you have anything that you would like to donate.

The SAC has opened a shop via Cafepress.com. Here you can buy high quality clothes, coffee mugs, bags, wall clocks, and much more with the PPA logo. Please use the link below to find our shop, don’t just go to cafépress and search for the name (our group gets a better commission when purchased via the link). Please pass this info on to others that might be interested in shopping at our site. Next year’s student meeting/networking luncheon will depend on these funds!
